Federer advances to second round of Basel

The 2012 Swiss Indoors tournament has started a couple of days ago, and the number 1 seed Roger Federer has safely advanced to the second round of Basel, defeating the world number 83 Benjamin Becker with a score of 7-5 and 6-3.

Roger Federer’s birthplace was in Basel, Switzerland, which why he is most favored there by his homeland fans. Federer is looking forward to claim his 6th Basel title, and if he wins this tournament, Federer will be the Basel Champion for three years in a row once again. Last year, Federer defeated Kei Nishikori with a score of 6-1 and 6-3 in the 2011 Basel final. Kei Nishikori was a player who defeated Novak Djokovic in the semis, though Novak was injured at the time. Federer has won the Basel tournament in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, and 2011. Federer was defeated by Novak Djokovic in the 2009 Basel Finals with a score of 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, but this time, Novak is not in the tournament.

Federer seems to have a somewhat difficult draw this year. If all of the seeded players advance through the matches without any upsets, Federer will eventually face Andreas Seppi, Stanislas Wawrinka(Or Viktor Troicki), and Del Potro throughout the tournament. I think Federer is going to have a hard time, but he should be able to get the title. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Roger Federer will be facing either Thomaz Bellucci or Go Soeda in the second round of the Swiss Indoors.
