Davis Cup Semifinals Prediction

The county tennis tournament reached the semifinals, with Spain facing America, and the Czech Republic facing Argentina.

As of September 14th, the results are 2-0 with Spain leading, and the other match is tied with a count of 1-1.

First, lets take a look at the USA vs Spain match.

USA’s weapon is John Isner and the Bryan Brothers. John Isneris a top 10 ranked player, and his height allows him to hit big serves and sweep the ball away with his volley when the serve is returned.

I think that the only thing which Isner lacks on is his stamina and his movements. For the doubles match, USA will insert the Bryan Brothers. They just recently became the number one doubles team in the world again, and will most likely win the doubles in the match against Spain. However, Spain may cause quite a fight in the doubles, because one Spanish player, Marc Lopez, is ranked number 8 in the doubles rankings, and he will be partnering up with Marcel Granollers, who is ranked number 13 in the doubles rankings. However, I still predict that the Bryan Bros will win the match.

David Ferrer won against Sam Querry with a game count of 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, 6-4, and John Isner faced an upset by being defeated from the world number 12, Nicolas Almagro, with a count of 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 3-6 , 7-5.

In order for America to win this match, John Isner will have to defeat David Ferrer, Sam Querry must defeat Nicolas Almagro, and finally, they must win the doubles match.

I would say that this match is over, also because the surface on which the match will be played is Red Clay. I predict that Spain will win, 4-1.

(Rafael Nadal of Spain and Mardy Fish of the USA will not be playing in this match of the Davis Cup due to health issues.)

Now, lets take a look at the other semifinals match. Argentina V.S. Czech Republic.

Argentina has two strong singles players who are Juan Martin del Potro and Juan Monaco. Del Potro has won a grand slam title in 2009 at the U.S. Open, and Juan Monaco made it into the top 10 just a month ago.

The Czech Republic also has a very strong player who defeated Roger Federer in this year’s U.S. Open quarter-finals. His name is Thomas Berdych. Berdych is currently number 6 in the world rankings, and he has a very good forehand. The Czech Republic’s  other singles player is Radek Stepnak, who is ranked as #40 in the singles rankings.

The current match stats are 1-1, with Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina defeating Czech Republic’s Radek Stepnak with a count of 6-4, 6-4, 6-2. Thomas Berdych defeated Juan Monaco with a count of 6-1, 4-6, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Berdych will face Del Potro, and Stepnak will face Juan Monaco in their next matches of the Davis Cup. As for the doubles, Carlos Berloq and Eduardo Schwank of Argentina will face Czech Republic’s Lukas Rosol and Ivo Minar.

My predictions (Winners are in bold.)

Thomas Berdych vs Juan Martin del Potro (Del Potro defeated Thomas Berdych in this year’s French Open, so I think that Del Potro will be able to win against him again on red clay.)

Radek Stepnak vs Juan Monaco

Lukas Rosol/Ivo Minar vs Carlos Berloq/Eduardo Schwank

Therefore, I predict that Argentina will win with a score of 4-1.

Sorry, I didn’t know that you were allowed to change the players that were already announced.

The Davis Cup finals will take place on November 16th to November 18th of 2012.
